Jacob: Wrestling With God — When God Renames What Struggle Has Shaped

You probably know what it feels like to carry an old name. Not the one on your driver’s license — the inner one. The name that whispers failure, or too much, or not enough. Jacob lived under a name like that. Jacob literally meant “he grasps the heel” — a trickster, a schemer. It was earned.

But God didn’t call Jacob by his reputation. He called him by his future. “Your name shall not be Jacob any more, but your name will be Israel.” Israel means one who strives with God — and that striving was not a mark of shame. It was a mark of encounter.

This wasn’t the first time God spoke this renaming over Jacob. It came earlier, at the Jabbok river, the night Jacob wrestled until dawn and refused to let go (Genesis 32). But here at Bethel, God confirms it. He says it again. Some things God has to say twice before we let ourselves believe them.

Think about what it takes to wrestle. You have to be fully present. You can’t fight something at arm’s length. Jacob’s struggle with God was intimate, exhausting, and costly — he walked with a limp afterward. And yet he was blessed. Sometimes the deepest blessings arrive through the hardest nights.

One of the truest lessons from Jacob is this: God is not surprised by your wrestling. He knows every doubt, every 3 a.m. prayer that felt like it bounced off the ceiling, every season where you held on by a thread. And He is still there, still speaking your new name over you.

Whatever old name you’ve been carrying into this morning — God has another word for you. Not a word that erases your history, but one that redeems it. He renames what struggle has shaped.
