Rich in Mercy: What God Does Not Give You

Psalm 103:8-10 is one of the most quietly stunning passages in all of Scripture. David is not writing theory. He is writing memory — his own history with a God who had every right to walk away and never did.

Look at what the text actually says God is: merciful, gracious, slow to anger, abundant in loving kindness. These are not policies God adopted. They are his character. His nature. The way he faces you on an ordinary Tuesday morning is the same way he faced David after his worst failures.

And then comes the relief that is almost too good to sit with: he has not dealt with us according to our sins. Think about what that means. You have sinned. God knows it fully, sees it clearly — and has chosen not to repay you for it. That is not a loophole. That is grace operating at the deepest level of who he is.

The prophet Micah asked a question that still echoes: “Who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage? He doesn’t retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness. He will again have compassion on us. He will tread our iniquities under foot; and you will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” (Micah 7:18-19, WEB) Nobody else does this. No other god in human imagination casts sin into the depths of the sea. That image is not delicate — it is thorough. Drowned. Gone.

Some mornings you may not feel forgiven. Feelings are real, but they are not always true. “It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23, WEB) His compassion does not take the day off when you are struggling to believe it. It is simply there, new, every single morning — including this one.

The reason God can be this generous is not that your sin doesn’t matter. It matters enormously. The reason is that Jesus absorbed what your sin required, so that mercy could flow freely to you. You are not receiving a discount. You are receiving a gift paid for at an unimaginable price.

So when the accuser in your own mind whispers that God is keeping score and you are losing, you can answer with the anchor: he will not always accuse, and he does not stay angry forever. He is rich in mercy — and that richness has your name on it.

Have you been treating God as someone who is mostly disappointed in you — waiting to see how badly you mess up next? Is there a specific failure you are still carrying that you have never fully handed over, because some part of you believes it is too much even for him? When you think about receiving mercy, does it feel like something you have to earn first — and if so, where did that idea come from? What would change about your day if you actually believed, down in your bones, that God’s anger toward your sin is not the last word?

Bring all of that honestly with you now, and let’s be still before him together.

May you walk out of this moment lighter than you came in, held by a mercy that does not waver. May the richness of his love be more real to you today than the weight of anything you have done.
